Functionality comes first at the basic but cheerful Hotel Pension Berolina, which occupies a late 19th century residential building by Charlottenburg station in former West Berlin. The 75 guestrooms feature sunny yellow wallpaper and simple wooden furniture. All have desks and televisions. The rooms do not have private bathrooms but there are several bathrooms on all four floors.
Guests can tuck into Berlin-style breakfasts in the dining room each morning and prepare their own food if they wish in the kitchen. The building is equipped with wireless Internet access, which guests can connect to for a fee. The front desk is open round the clock and there is a currency exchange service; those arriving by car can park nearby. Guests will find a host of bars and eateries in the surrounding Ku'Dam area and the sights and sounds of central Berlin are an easy journey away on the city's trams, metro and buses. Charlottenburg Palace and Berlin's Congress Centre are two kilometres away and Museum Island and the famous TV tower, which dominates the Berlin skyline, are both within five kilometres. Tegel airport is 10 kilometres and about a 15-minute journey away. The 109 bus runs directly between the airport and Charlottenburg, right by the hotel. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal.
